Suspected Methanol poisoning in Laos tragically kills six foreign travellers

Suspected methanol poisoning kills 6 in south east asia

Travelling the world as a digital nomad offers the freedom to work remotely while experiencing new cultures, cuisines, and adventures. However, this lifestyle also comes with risks, including exposure to hazards like Methanol poisoning that many travellers may not even be aware of.

Methanol poisoning is a potentially life-threatening condition often associated with consuming adulterated alcohol.

While we don’t want to scare anyone and know that it’s unlikely to happen to you we wanted to bring awareness of methanol poisoning to hopefully help digital nomads avoid getting into trouble or even potentially losing their lives.

Recently, in November 2024, six people tragically lost their lives in Laos, Southeast Asia, due to suspected methanol poisoning.

This incident serves as a stark reminder for travellers to remain vigilant, especially when enjoying alcoholic beverages in countries where alcohol production and distribution may not be as tightly regulated as in Europe, North America or other countries.

We wanted to bring this to the attention of Global Circle readers as Southeast Asia is a highly popular digital nomad destination and perhaps greater awareness among digital nomads/travellers in general can help to avoid more people unnecessarily cutting their lives short while having the time of their lives!

Please do share this information with your digital nomad friends and fellow travellers. Knowing this could have potentially saved those six people who sadly died from doing nothing more than enjoying a few drinks while travelling.

What is Methanol Poisoning?

Methanol, also known as wood alcohol, is a toxic chemical often found in industrial applications such as antifreeze and solvents.

Methanol can sometimes contaminate alcoholic beverages when producers use improper distillation techniques or deliberately adulterate alcohol to cut costs and increase profits.

Drinking methanol-contaminated alcohol can cause severe symptoms, including:

– Nausea and vomiting

– Blurred vision or blindness

– Confusion or seizures

– Coma or death in severe cases

Symptoms may take hours to appear, making it critical to act fast if methanol poisoning is suspected.

30ml – 60ml of Methanol could be lethal to adults

30-60 mL of Methanol is potentially lethal to an adult. To give you a reference, in the United States, a standard shot is around 44ml while in Europe it could be 25ml or less.

What this means is that you don’t need to be on a crazy all-night drinking session for things to go wrong, just a few drinks containing 30ml – 60ml of Methanol overall could be enough to cause serious damage or even death.

Why Does Methanol Poisoning Happen?

In some developing countries, alcohol production may not be as highly regulated as in other countries around the world, leading to unsafe practices.

Bootleg or counterfeit alcohol may contain high levels of methanol, either due to improper distillation or intentional tampering.

Street vendors, unlicensed distilleries, and even some legitimate-looking bars may unknowingly or intentionally serve methanol-contaminated drinks.

As a digital nomad exploring local nightlife, it’s important to recognize these risks, particularly in regions like Southeast Asia, where such incidents are sadly not uncommon.

However, while perhaps more prevalent in Asia, there have been cases of Methanol poisoning in Europe, including a 2001 case in Estonia that killed 68 people, also there have been cases in Ireland, Italy, Poland, Norway and the Czech Republic as well. While rare they do occur.

To be safe, try to avoid drinking alcohol from questionable sources!

What to Do if Methanol Poisoning Happens Abroad

If you suspect methanol poisoning, seek medical attention immediately. In countries with limited healthcare resources, knowing what to do can be life-saving:

Contact Emergency Services – Call local emergency numbers or visit the nearest hospital as soon as possible.

Inform Medical Staff – Clearly explain that methanol poisoning is suspected so they can administer appropriate treatments, such as ethanol therapy or fomepizole, which counteract methanol’s toxic effects.

Call Your Digital Nomad Insurance Provider – This is where having robust digital nomad insurance from providers like SafetyWing becomes crucial. Their coverage can assist with emergency medical expenses, including evacuations if needed.

How to Reduce the Risks of Methanol Poisoning

Stick to Trusted Establishments

Opt for bars and restaurants with good reputations and avoid consuming homemade or unbranded alcohol.

Avoid Cheap or Unmarked Bottles

Counterfeit alcohol is often sold at significantly lower prices. When in doubt, avoid purchasing alcohol from street vendors or unregulated markets.

Inspect Labels

Check for signs of tampering, poor-quality packaging, or lack of regulatory markings on bottles.  If in doubt, walk away!

Consider Abstaining in High-Risk Areas

In countries with known methanol poisoning incidents, it may be safest to avoid alcohol entirely and stick with juices or mocktails instead.
